The Parenting PATH Awarded Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust Grant to Address Childhood Trauma in Forsyth County

WINSTON-SALEM, NC — The Parenting PATH has received a grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust to launch a comprehensive systems-change initiative designed to reduce Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and improve trauma-informed care across Forsyth County.

The funding, provided through the Trust’s Local Impact in Forsyth County program area, supports a year-long effort to transform how systems and communities respond to families exposed to trauma and ACEs. By implementing evidence-based screening tools and trauma education, the project addresses the long-term health and social inequities that often stem from childhood trauma.

The centerpiece of this initiative is the pilot of the Resource Parenting Curriculum, a culturally responsive, 10-module training for caregivers involved in the child welfare system. Delivered by a team that includes a facilitator with lived experience, the curriculum helps parents understand the impact of trauma on child behavior while emphasizing hope and growth.

In addition to this educational pilot, the grant supports three additional objectives:

  • Enhanced Trauma Screening by implementing the Child and Adolescent Trauma Screen (CATS-C) to accurately and sensitively identify trauma exposure in children ages 3 to 17 in the welfare system, ensuring families receive timely and targeted interventions.
  • First Responder Training to provide ACEs education to Forsyth County’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), helping first responders utilize de-escalation strategies when encountering trauma-related behaviors.
  • Staff Well-being to invest in secondary trauma and resilience training and support for staff to ensure they can maintain high-quality, compassionate care for the community.

"We are deeply grateful to the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust for their partnership and shared vision to address childhood trauma prevention.” said Elizabeth Miller, Chief Executive Officer at The Parenting PATH. “This grant allows us to bridge critical gaps; from first responder interactions to caregiver support, ensuring that Forsyth County is a place where every family has the opportunity to heal and thrive."
